I'm hoping the 818 ends up with enough side ledge by the door for something like the McLaren F1's side mirrors to work and look good. Maybe with a bit more leading edge and throw back.

The street versions of the F1 are still one of the best looking supercars.

I'm not too concerned about the mirrors. Tons of cool OEM shapes out there to choose from. The WRX mirrors will need a clever design to work as they attach to the front corner of the window/door, like many others I'm sure.

+1 I would like that ledge too. It makes the car look really nice.

Btw.: some trivia:
The McLaren F1 mirrors shares it's mirrors with the VW Corrado. http://jalopnik.com/#!5166225/the-vw-corrado-shares-its-parts-with-a

More cars with the Corrado mirrors:

Spectre R42
Jaguar XJ220
Jaguar XJR15
Mega Monte Carlo

All rare supercars with those VW mirrors...

The McLaren F1 tail lights are of some other mass produced street car. - It's right in the spirit of Factory Five. Saving money and engineering effort by using donor parts on non-critical items. Thereby spending effort on the parts that matter. (suspension, handling, build quality)

Interesting about the mirrors. Sort of reflects what I was thinking in my post above.

IIRC, the old Lotus Esprit, after the 'softer' redesign, had Toyota Corolla taillamps.

Would side mirror location be regulated on a kit car?

I think that for aerodynamics it wants to be as far back behind the edge of the windshield as possible. However for viewing scope it wants to be mounted somewhat over the front wheels and in the field of vision of the driver.

Regulations on protecting pedestrians moved the side view mirrors off the front hood/fender long ago, just wondering if these safety considerations apply to a kit car.

From everything I've heard, the fender-mounted mirrors are utterly terrible for actually seeing anything behind you. If you think about it, the because the mirror is so much further away, the "screen size" if you will is much smaller and you see less behind you.

I think they want to be mounted where a quick flick of the eyes can hit them, rather than being in the direct field of vision. Like this.

One of the things I remember from friends experimentation with aftermarket wing mirrors is that damping the vibrations of the mirror and its housing is incredibly important for usability. Some of those thin, stalk-like mirrors have issues where the stalk is not capable of preventing the mirror from vibrating over bumps, engine revs, etc.

I INVITE YOU TO READ THIS, i've made a thread called "legal issues". See "indirect vision" chapter8...
This is the latest euro rules. As the 818 wants to be a world car, it must be compliant...
