View Full Version : Gauge Grounds?

On my MK3 FFR Ron Francis wiring harness, it seems I have one too many grounds for the gauges. I'm using Classic instruments 5" speedo and a 4-in-one gauge (oil, temp, volt, fuel).
The RF manual shows one ground for gauges, one for horn, one for high beam and one for turn signals. But my actual wiring harness has two grounds for the gauges. The diagram only shows one going in series through the gauges, but not continuing back to the harness or the chassis.
The manual does show two different 'dash light' feeds going to the gauges (one for speedo/tach, one for all others), but still only one ground for all of them.
What should I do with this 'extra' ground?

Another concern/curiosity I have is in my Classic Instruments manual: The speedo requires a "Dedicated Chassis Ground", while the 4-in-one gauge only specifies "Ground".
Would this mean that I use one of the two wiring harness grounds on my 4-in-one, while I use a separate 'to the chassis' ground on the speedo?

I know that "you can never have enough grounds", but I don't wanna risk damaging these expensive gauges.
Thanx!

You definitely can't have too many grounds. I ended up adding several behind the dash for my Smiths gauges and lights. The ground wire should be able to carry as much power from the item as is being sent to it so don't load up everything on one or two grounds. I would definitely have a separate ground for each of your Classic instruments.

It is a good idea to tie into the various grounds near their terminal points (tail lights, head lights, etc) and ground them to the frame locally. You are pushing a lot of juice through the limited grounding points in the harness. This was pushed in the build school and a lot of posters on the forums have also encouraged this. I grounded my dash gauges to the loop behind the dash.

I used this dedicated grounding terminal strip for my dash.

I also used a dedicated grounding terminal strip for my Smith Guages. Mounted it on the cowl hoop under the dash. You can see it with the door open from this angle but not from the seated position.19457
