Using a donor from a 93 Mustang and have cleaned up the engine and tranny, now putting them back together.

I am having difficulty getting the tranny to mate with the engine. Am I doing this wrong? (answer : probably).

Should I mount the bell housing to the tranny first or the engine first? I also used that handy plastic insert, alignment tool for the disk, worked great.

If there is a trick to it, I never found it. Some don't have any trouble getting them together. I envy them.

Check that your pilot bearing doesn't have any damage that would prevent the input shaft from sliding through it. Also, try rotating the trans input shaft to line up the splines.

I think it's easier to bolt the bellhousing to the engine first. Make sure that the throw out bearing goes on the bearing retainer as you begin to assemble them. I'm not sure what your engine is sitting on but if it's close to the floor, you can rest the tranny on a floor jack and work it in slowly. Raise or lower the tranny as needed to get them to line up. Put the tranny in gear and slowly turn the tail shaft to get the splines to line up with the clutch disc. Just be patient - don't need (or want) brute force to get them together.

Problem solved... bell housing mounts to tranny first... goes in much easier because the bell-housing and cover plate have pins for easy line-up.

Doh!

Nice looking drivetrain, now do yourself a favor and put a real shifter on that T-5 too! ;)

For others looking at this thread I will add a technique that has helped me. I stick the driveshaft into the back of the trans. this way I can rotate the shaft, w/ the trans in
4th gear, and that will rotate the input shaft and often helps getting the splines lined up w/ the disc.

x2 on the after market shifter. I've got a pro 5.0 on my tremec, it eliminates the z pattern from 2nd to 3rd gear. put it in first, and slam it back and forth. no more missed shifts.
