I don't wants to post them here, mainly because they are so large.
Basically there is an oil leak around the Oil filter. Not sure where it is coming from. Any feedback is appreciated.

Is that a coolant/oil heat exchanger that the filter spins on to?

there are 2 gaskets i believe under that (oil cooler), that are known to leak from time to time just replace em and youre good.

That is the oil heater/cooler. When the car is warming up, it helps the oil to get to temp faster. After it's up to temp, the coolant helps to cool the oil somewhat (though not as good as a true oil to air cooler).
On the 06 model there are two o-rings. Use a 24mm (I think) socket to remove the center bolt. It's a long piece and when it comes out, the copper part comes off. Remove all the little bolts and get access to a second one. It's not uncommon for these to leak after a while.

This diagram will be close to what you have, but I've found I don't have two o-ring H's. Just pay attention to what you take apart.

That is the oil heater/cooler.
On my GTI, that was known as the oil/coolant exchanger! :(

Bstuke, I love your progress and 818r pioneering. Would you though limit your posts to your build thread? Oh wait you have two build threads. Would you, or mods, combine your three threads?

This thread is fine where it is..it is about an oil leak and if somebody does a search for an oil leak in the filter area, this thread would be useful.

It is interesting that nobody has come up with a replacement for that coolant circulator that would give you thermostatic oil cooler capabilities. Most of the oil cooler kits simply extend the filter location. Not to mention the kits are $600-$800!

He has 1 thread about a teardown and 1 thread about his build. There is a Bkafe with a build thread, not to be confused with bstuke. I read too quickly and got confused at first too.

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/mechie3/Oilcooler.jpgEverything above "G" looked fine. I am thinking the accident caused it to come loose, dirt lodged in between causing the leak. I pulled it off and cleaned up everything real well and reassembled it. The "G" o-ring seats fine and seals well It looks tight now. I guess we will find out soon enough! At least it is easy to get to and replace if needed.

I have not had to many problems with the seals leaking once I replaced them. Good thread, because it is a problem that can and does occur as the seals wear, get hit etc. replace the seals, but also check if the unit is bent at all, I have seen them leak when they are slightly bent, good luck 818r#1
