I finally hit a major milestone, engine removal!
19282192831928419285

I had been tinkering with the car, removing this and that to get to the point that I can pull the engine and tranny.

Now to clean up and get the engine and tranny clean and broken apart.

Note to self:
140 140 142 145PSI compression test.

bstuke
06-29-2013, 02:23 PM
Are you kidding me? I have had it since April!

Motor is out, can't find my compression test kit...
Rack out and cleaned. Need to depower it.
Front Brakes/Spindles/Hubs out and cleaned up
Steering/Pedal Box out
Gas Tank stuff out.

Working on the rear stuff now, but it is getting hot!

OK, I feel I am 99% done with the donor.

Engine Compartment:
Engine
Tranamission
Radiator
Brake master
Clutch master
Clutch slave
Rack
Lower suspension
Spindles
CV axle(Someone please tell me how to get that apart!)
Brakes

Passenger compartment:
E brake

Have I missed anything? I am debating if I am going to pull the harness. I guess I should as I can reuse some of the connectors.

Wayne Presley
06-30-2013, 12:53 PM
You will need quite a few connectors so you might as well grab the harness out.

18X9 9.5 rears..

What ET did you get the 40 or the 45. I'm looking at the same wheels. What and where did you them?

bstuke
07-03-2013, 05:57 AM
I actually used a local wheel guy. He took a new set of FR500's in trade I had that wasn't selling. The 18X9.5 only comes in 40 offset. The 17X8 comes in 40 and 45. I am going to use ARP studs and spacers.

Give Wayne a call. He can give you more detail.

C.Plavan

Yea- looks like a lot of square tubing replaced with round. Looks beefy which any racer will like.

I won't be going before the SCCA SEB for quite a while, so AMod is what it will run in. From a track perspective it will be TT only, and whatever class is already established. I suspect STU and TTU.

I don't think it was replaced as much as added.

Can anyone, preferably with pics, describe the frame differences between the r and the s?

Front: there's a round bar roll hoop over the top of the dash.
Side: Where the S has a big V shape to step over and get in, there is a roudn tube going up vertically from the floor to the upper most side round bar and then a ladder of round tubes in between to support it.

Bob,
Congratulations, looking forward to following your build. Tear down begins next week on my donor and the shelves are filling up with hot rod parts for my R.
FFR had talked about the 818R being able to except a Wilwood pedal box in addition to the OE pedal box, is that an option on your car?

Yeah had a nice long chat with Jason this morningh e told me 2 extra weeks, date set at August 31st. They said that the shop car and Bobs were really one offs and mine will be the first true production R. Yours is most likely number 2. I'm perfectly cool with the wait, I'd rather have the control arm issue worked out and any more kinks that may present themselves. More of my parts will be ready as well.

Meaning they bent and cut the additional tubes in house for everything. The next ones will use prebent/precut pieces method that FFR uses on all their other cars.

Looking good. I'm so jealous.

I like the harness bars they added. However, I'm not sure my Racetech Halo seat will fit with the side bar. The bar looks like it may hit the Halo part of the seat.
Does it have the mounts on the frame for a windshield? Just in case we wanted to add the "coupe" stuff later :P ?

Been busy with work, but got some of the front suspension done:

Fabricated shims from flat aluminum for the inside rear LCA mount.
Need to figure out the best way to enlarge the outside rear LCA mount.
Threw the upper ball joints in the freezer.
Drilled and mounted the shock mounts on my steel LCA's. You really need a drill press to do this as there is a lot of potential for the bit to walk when you are drilling the outer hole. There is two layers of steel, so I clamped the LCA in the press really good before I drilled.
Installed the really cold upper ball joints. I already own a socket because it is the same ball joint as the Roadster etc. But you really need it and impact to get them in good. I highly recommend borrowing a "kit" from the local parts store. Pay a refundable deposit, do it right, and take the kit back. If you are doing track height, you need 4 qty. 1/2 20 3", and 44 1/2 washers to use as shims, 11 in each spot where the dogbone normally goes.
Installed the lower ball joints.
Went to paint the UCA brackets and all my POR15 has dried up! That stuff is perfect for brackets like this. Gotta order some tomorrow.

Two Autocross points events this weekend, and lots of people tuning for Nationals, so I will be busy all weekend. The following week SoFl for diving and macro work, so I am out of here!

Can you take a picture of your washer and bolt combo? Any reason why you chose not to use a one piece spacer?Haven't picked up the bolts yet. No reason on the washers -vs- one piece spacer. Washers are easier, and when you sand off the edge, 11 fit perfectly. I'll post some pictures in a little while.

Sorry I have not been around. Our FY ends 10/31, so I am busy trying to close 200% of my quota so I can just pay someone to build this thing!

I did get the front mocked up. Baer bumpsteer, 325lb spring(Still waiting on the 350lb from FFR). Hopefully I will get the rear on the ground and off to the race shop for Wilwood pedal box fitting and welding. I'm not messing with the stock MC, it does not make sense.

I also need to figure out the passenger side rack mount. I only got the mount for the old rack, not the 05-06.

1st R, KONI yellow shocks????

RM1SepEx
09-28-2013, 08:02 AM
who knows, check out the KONI shock thread

we were told Reds with R's Yellows with S's but many got the opposite... I had a pair of each! :-)

Different construction mono tube gas filled vs dual tube

yellows are rebuildable, reds are not

reds react faster due to single tube, dual piston design

I chose to go with yellows for my S

I assume they are valved the same based on the development work done by Factory Five

If I were doing an R I'd ask about the optional race shocks. I was quoted $1700 upgrade for my S. Double externally adjustable

Gotcha on the bump steer kit. I'll see if I need it before dropping another $175

So no spacers were provided between the brackets for the a arms to be mounted at track height? Or were they just backordered?

That's the Baer bump steer kit, for Subaru. Summit sells it.

Progress!

After significant ECU work, Wayne has a really good tune on the motor now. Don't ask, it is top secret and proprietary. There was also a busted clockspring on one of the TGV's, and that gave him some fits. There is still work to be done, but I see light at the end of the tunnel.

In true rotten luck fashion, 818R 001 broke the dyno at MegaSquirt! OK maybe the dyno simply broke down.... So I won't get it back for a few more weeks, but then it is on to a laundry list of items to get taken care of.

In other new I heard that the 818R(Red) with a 400HP motor in it broke on Friday at VIR. Apparently an oil leak caused a small fire, and caused the waste gate to stop working, which caused a 45PSI blowout of the engine. Damn..

Apparently an oil leak caused a small, and caused the waste gate to stop working, which caused a 45PSI blowout of the engine. Damn..

FFR is not having luck with the 818R, and that is an expensive engine. The ecu should have a fuel cut and boost cut programmed in for these occurances. You can have a wastgate stop working, but fuel/ boost cut will save it and you can fix issue and keep racing. I am disappointed for them.

BobHey Bob, front is Enkei Kojin 17X8 +45 and the back is 18X9.5 +45 with two spacers.

I had to raise the front ride height about 1/4 inch to keep the tire from rubbing the top on turns. The back inside of each front wheel rubs as well. But who turns that hard?

We will see on the back this weekend.

I have no idea what it weighs. I will know next weekend at Solo National Tour.

Pretty sure MS3Pro with C16 gas is helping quite a bit on the HP. It runs flawlessly thanks to all the combined hard work at Very Cool Parts and DIYAutotune. I highly recommend the MS3Pro ECU from VCP.

Don't forget my commission! :p

This weekend was the first SCCA Pro Solo tour stop, and is called Dixie Nationals. Saturday it rained, but that helped keep the field somewhat tight. I had two clean runs, and them a BM car right front of me pukes oil on the wet track. I found out later what caused it and I only have one question: WHOINTHEHELLUSESPLASTICOILPRESSURELINEONARACECAR!! !!! Really? WTF? So please don't do that on your 818, use SS line or better yet an electronic sensor.

I was in a position to not finish DFL. Until there was a dry course on Sunday! I coned my first and second run and if they were clean I would have been respectable. I DNF'd my last run. So I was DFL.

My feedback:

The front end stuck like glue, even with no aero. I was amazed at the grip. Amazed. The back stuck like peanut butter. If you plan on doing ANY track or AutoX work, you MUST have an LSD. It is a pain in the butt to pay a Subaru mechanic to install it, but you will not be able to get power down without it. That said, I need another half degree of camber, and maybe a little more toe in on the back. I am also going to soften the shock, and maybe go with a softer spring for now. It was fun getting a little drift on, but not really what I want.

Yes it was but happy with the results for the most part. We were really pushing it. I have to look and see what springs, but whatever comes with an 818R. I suspect the shocks are set full stiff, I never looked and that is how they come. Front sway bar is not hooked up. I couldn't get it to stay in one spot. Very little body roll anyway. Tires are A6 P245/40ZR-17 front and P285/30ZR-18 rear.

Mitch Wright

Someone posted the McMaster Carr P/N of a collar to which secures the sway bar. It's not so much to reduce roll, as to balance the chassis; the bar in front will shift balance more to understeer. Since you were having rear grip issues, it sounds like you might want to try to hook it up.

It was recommended that without the wing I go to a 400lb spring in the back which I did. I did get the collars for the sway bar so now it is back in and staying put.

We also added more rear camber and the combo worked much better. Still a ways to go as I really need LSD but it will have to wait.

I do have a line on a $100 working tranny that I can get rebuilt and install the LSD in it. I am still pondering it.

I am also really happy with the Beatrush mounts, highly recommended. I also have an ACT Prolite flywheel and 6 puck clutch that is working flawlessly.

We did break again but once again minor. There is a nipple on most aftermarket radiators in the upper passenger side corner. DO NOT put a push nipple and clamp on it! Do the right thing and have it welded shut permanently! You will thank me later..

I have been worried about that radiator nipple/plug since day one. I'm wondering if looping a line from that nipple, to the overflow nipple will suffice. Or throwing some JB weld on it, then still use a plug with hose clamp. I'm guessing the rubber plug ripped or cracked?

If you think that an 818 has questionable handling, think again. I still need a complete 4 wheel alignment after lots of changes, but still kicked everyone's butt by a half a G. With the lone exception of an 8 year old in a Quarter Midget. He was a ringer...

I beat 2 Exocets, one a turbo Miata, and the other an LS7, along with 20-30 other vehicles ranging from an NSX to a dune buggy specifically prepared for the skidpad(?)

What I'm asking is that you be specific about what has been done to the motor to control oil surge and vent the motor. Info on your engine in the thread is hard for me to find. You have a drive by wire throttle-body so I'm assuming it is an older motor. Wayne built the motor, as I understand it. Has a KB oil pan. What else?
The reason I'm so curious is I just returned from Watkins Glen where a buddy was having a nightmare of a time keeping oil in his engine. Has KB oil pan.
We hooked up two Moroso catch cans and that wasn't enough for a session. Finally hooked it up to drain it back into the motor and vented the catch can.
How did you manage to not have any issues with those constant high G's?

bstuke

Lets see:

Stock ej255
tomei extreme pipe and up pipe
coolant delete and perrin oil cooler kit

Killer B kit pan tray and pickup.
throttle is wired.

I have zero oiling issues. I did determine that it seems the tstat keeps oil in the cooler and lines and I overfilled the engine when I installed the Killer B. Once I figured that out everything was fine. I do need to get a real gauge on the motor but the switch is wired to the ecu and has not shut off.

Do you have a blowby issue somewhere?
I don't with my engine. I run the head breather hoses to a JEGS can and let it drain back into the engine. The other vents T together and tie into the top center case vent.
41566
My friend is the one with the car that may have serious blowby. It is well known that oil can fill a boxer engine head and case pressure (blowby) push it out through the head vents. I'm just surprised that you are not having issues at high G's and I still don't understand how your engine is vented.
According to Chris of Killer B, they have a new product, an oil control valve for racecars, (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2695465)specifically boxer engine cars, able sustain +1.5Gs consistently. It has been discussed at length on this NASIOC thread. (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2628337) The next step would be dry sump.

Looks bone stock to me but, I am not an early (GD) Subie guy. What I am not seeing in your photos is the CAI and turbo inlet hose area.
41584
Is the turbo inlet hose like this? If all this plumbing is stock then I have to question why oil is not getting into the intake.
When we raise our boost into the 16+ PSI range, where premium, 93 octane fuel is mandatory, then you run the risk of oil getting into the intake during hard cornering and diluting the octane. Blowby increases as boost goes up. This octane dilution then leads to detonation and stock piston ring-lands break rather easily. It happened to me with my rather stock '08 STi. I knew it was an issue so I added a catch-can. My Moroso catch can quickly filled up and then started dumping it into the inlet. Sudden smoke, from burning oil, is the first indicator.
How you don't have this occurring under high G's is a mystery to me. The KB stuff can help a lot, but it can only do so much during sustained G's.

Through the PCV system. Can do either an AOS or catch can. AOS is a little more elaborate but maintenance free. For your purposes, a catch can would probably be the best option. I'm not 100% certain that the catch cans do as good a job as a top of the line (heated) AOS at removing all the oil vapor though. I can show you my AOS if you like.

So I have the offset trailing arm. You have to mount it for clearance on the inside of both mount points, then shim the outer part. I got away with about an 1/8 inch spacer so it had good room to rotate if needed.

The wheel I used is an Enkei Kojin 18X9.5 +45 5x100. I have ARP studs, and had to use 2 10mm spacers to get it back out off the trailing arm, but still under the wheel well. The tire is actually a 285/30ZR18 Hoosier A6.
