View Full Version : Kirkham Vs. 458 Italia
Well the boys had their day at Las Vegas Motorspeedway.
On page 15 is the start of the results discussions. I would like to know how much money was placed on this bet. There are two threads going and both are very good reading.

And what did this race prove? It doesn't really show any strengths or weaknesses in either platform. Just that motor "A" can propel chassis "A" and driver "A" one quarter of a mile at a faster rate than motor "B" in chassis "B" with driver "B" can do it. What exactly does this race prove?

I would have rather seen 10 laps on the road course where the cars were meant to be. The funny thing is neither of those guys can drive for crap. 10.78 in Vegas at 4400' corrected? Seriously? That's sad.
On the other hand, for 500k on the line, I would have sprayed the snot out of the Cobra at the big end, just in case.

Isn't that the point of any motorsports competition?

I agree with Rick and Ready, you know if you want to have a pissing match over if your Camaro is faster then my Mustang, by all means take them to a drag strip. But neither of these cars were meant to perform at there best on a drag strip.
Take them to Top Gear USA and let the Stig's American cuz drive them on the test track, or take them to a road course and have a 20 laps race, heck even do a zero to 100 to zero race, but a straight up drag race, and for that kind of smash??? I guess I am missing something.

Yes and No. This does prove "A" is better than "B" when you simply hammer the gas pedal and go in a straight line. But it doesn't prove anything about the package other than "I can go fast in a straight line" It didn't even have to be a Cobra/Roadster to do it. There are rot-box Honda Civics out there that could likely beat a Ferrari down a drag strip.
I'm going to parrot what has already been said, I would have rather seen the two of them roll a dozen laps around a road track. To me, that would prove the platform vs. platform argument better than just stomping on the gas at a dragstrip. If the Cobra had beat the Ferrari in a 10 lap race around a technical track it would have proven the platform as being overall better than a Ferrari 458. I don't think the 458 being able to drag race was ever really considered when the car was developed.

That's why there are so many types of auto racing. I would rather watch a drag race than NASCAR or F1 style of racing. Nothing wrong with any of them. The bet was a drag race so they did it.

I'm thinking I need to find the dude in the Cobra lessons on how to drive. Given the wheel spin he went through, I'm thinking he could have been in the low 10s. Either way, my former boss has a Ferrari, I sent him the link. :D

Mike, totally agree there are all types of racing, and I enjoy most of them, but I enjoy drag racing much more when it is with cars built for the strip.

Yes and No. This does prove "A" is better than "B" when you simply hammer the gas pedal and go in a straight line.Actually that is all the Ferrari driver had to do with his traction control and paddle shifters. The Cobra driver actually had to use the clutch and feather the gas to not break the rear tires loose, and he came home with a decisive win against a car that costs what 2, 3, maybe 4 times as much.
