The advanced ECU with variable cam timing allows a 'cammed' big block sound to be added to the motor by uploading a new tune. For the old school guys here, now your modular motor can sound like an old big block.

It's cool and a good thing. They sound like crap at idle but fine at rpm without the sound tune.

I can do something close to that with the 4.6 DOHC and the MS3. Well, I'll have to get it running first. My son has a slightly modified 03 Cobra and it had a pretty good lope last weekend. That was a bad thing because it was a vacuum leak, sounded good.

FYI, I would image they narrow up the LSA at idle to the point that overlap is in the lumpy cam range. I can't do that with the non-variable Mach1 motor but I will have control over the full sequential spark and fuel. I can rig it up to idle rough when fully warm, low load, and timed off the tps in the idle range. It would just sound lumpy after about 10 seconds of normal idle.

I won't need the two keys like on the Boss 302 (Black normal, Red race). My other option is swapping cams which would be easy enough with the engine in the chassis.

That sounds really cool and "old school", but makes me wonder if that is good for the engine. To create the sound don't you have to make the engine run differently then it was designed? Of course I am used to the mod motor purr now after running my stock 4.6L DOHC motor in the roadster for 2 years now.

As long as it's catless, I can't see any harm to the motor.

Even if there are cats, as long as it's burning all the fuel, no-worries.

So how do you get that tune?

I would imagine that the emissions goes out the window at idle though, make sure you have the stock tune when getting your tests done :-)

Like Parayh said, I can't see it hurting the engine, just using the adjustable valve timing to put in a bunch of overlap which is where the push rod engines get that lump from. I think it would have to pass through more unburtn fuel though which I suppose aint good for the kitty cats.

My understanding of the motor though is that since the timing is constantly changing, you could have that lump in their at idle but at 1000 RPMs be right back at the stock settings which is pretty damn cool.

That is precisely why we don't need stereos in our FFR cars. Music to my ears!
