View Full Version : Fuel Filter Install

I'm installing the fuel lines and the first step is to connect and mount the fuel filter to the frame.
The description says to mount it to the 2x3 pipe, but the photo shows a different car than I have, with the shocks mounted on the outside of the frame rather than the inside (I have an MKIV with IRS & carb with pump on engine).
On my car, there is no easy placement because the line to connect the fuel tank to the filter is a hard plastic and not very flexible.
I'm wondering anyone can recommend an alternate part that I can purchase in an auto parts store that would give me more flexibility with the placement.
If anyone has pix of a similar setup to mine, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

"carb with pump on engine"

Do you mean you have a mechanical fuel pump? If so, you shouldn't be mounting any filter in the suction line between the pump and the tank - doing so would result in too much pressure loss to where the pump will not operate. Always mount a filter downstream of the pump. In the case of a mechanical pump, this would look like a small filter in the fuel lines leading from the pump to the carb, and is often supplied by your engine builder.

The filters you are referencing in your question are installed with in-tank (or near-tank) electric pumps.

The complete kit that I have, provided a pickup which appears to be nothing more than a straw. The beginning of the manual lists a fuel pump as one of the items that I need to provide, so I'm not clear on why they'd put the filter in the build.
I will call FFR for clarification on this.
Thanks.

They include the EFI filter with the complete kit so that builders going that route with an in-tank pump have it but as ram g said for carb applications using a mechanical pump you will not use it. With the mechanical pump/carb configuration the filter should be between the pump and carb.

I checked with the Engine Factory, and the pump they provide is electric (rated for carburetor), not mechanical as I had thought.
The engine is set up with a filter between the pump and the carb, however, they recommend another filter prior to the pump.

Do not put a filter before the pump, unless you are happy with pump failures.

Direct from Holley Catalog/Technical Information:

For Carb applications with external electric fuel pumps, they recommend a 100 micron Pre-Filter (between tank and external pump) and 40 micron Post-filter (after external pump and before carburetor). Check out Holley online, I believe it is there as well. You can use the filter provided by FFR as a Pre-filter, that is what Whitby Motors does when installing external electric fuel pumps.

You will not need a return line. I suspect your tank pick up line has 2 ports, the larger one is for outgoing fuel (to the motor) and the smaller one is for fuel return (as needed for fuel injected set ups). You can leave the smaller return port capped with the black cap provided by FFR or purchase a single tube pick up from Breeze.

I am not able to help you with the location of the Pre-filter on the IRS set up or the location of the electric fuel pump, but I suspect the electric fuel pump can go in the same location as with 3-Link suspension. See discussion thread on this forum about Electric Fuel Pump location. The location I used is the angled 2x3 inch rectangular tube just forward of the rear passenger wheel (see pics).

You will need the pump and location figured out before you can run your fuel lines.

You can run just rubber hose from tank pick up to Pre-filter, make sure connections are suitable for hose clamps, or if enough length use the hose provided with the kit and its factory style connections. If you convert to rubber hose, you can make it long enough to drop the gas tank (in the future) without disconnecting the line.
