View Full Version : Build school
For someone who wants to build a 818 but doesn't have experience building a kit, do you think it's worth it for a weekend?

I think it would be. Plus you get the knowledge, confidence and credit yowards the kit. You can also tour the factory while your there.

School is in Howell, MI and well worth it, even if it is for a Roadster and, like me you are building an 818. I got a lot out of it, not least the belief that the project was do-able. This will be my first FFR build, and I needed to know. The 500 buck credit thing technically is for one year and toward the purchase of a Roadster (or 33 if you do that school). I understand next season, they are aiming at an actual 818 school.

I was assuming that once they start doing the build school for the 818 the credit would be applicable towards the 818.

Seems like an 818 build school would make sense since it will be their least expensive kit and a lot of people's first kit car. But barring that I would still like to do the hot rod school.

I would do an 818 school if I was building an 818. Same if I was doing a hot rod, by taking a hotrod class. I did a ground school (CRJ) once where the instructor said numerous times during class, "I am not sure how it works on a CRJ but this is how it works on the Embraer." Followed up how it works on the Embraer for the next hour or so. Thankfully, I had access to the "good" manual for the CRJ.

Oh...I didn't know this. Do you know when they'll start the 818 build school?

Somewhere early on, in a thread or on one of the videos, I recall that either Dave or Jim mentioned they would be doing build videos for the 818 like they started doing for the MKIV.
The current plan is to offer build school classes for the 818 next year in 2014.
I found it at https://www.factoryfive.com/kits/project-818/project-818-update-6/. I sent them an email asking for more info. I'll post it here when I get a response.

OOOOHHHWEEE!!
Last paragraph:
"Factory Five engineers spent a day at the Mott M-TEC Build School in Michigan. The current plan is to offer build school classes for the 818 next year in 2014. The 818 will join the Mk4 Roadster and ’33 Hot Rod at the famous 3-day Factory Five Build School."
I absolutely will be partaking when I get closer to putting money down.
This is what they said to me via email:
There will be a build school for the FFR 818, but nothing is scheduled at this time. Please reference our website in the future, as we will post this information as soon as we receive it.
You would be able to apply the $500 FFR credit to the 818 kit.

As would I. But unless the school is started very early in 2014, it probably won't be soon enough for me. My kit is scheduled for production in October 2013. While my newbie status as a builder will probably mean that I won't move all that fast on the project, it is still likely that I'll be done by late Spring 2014.

Yeah. That really sucks to have such an early delivery date. I feel really bad for you, so if you'd like to trade delivery dates, you just let me know! :p
