Hi all... I recently bought a completed mark III roadster. Working on getting the title transferred over and the inspector is telling me he needs to see the serial number on the frame. The FFR plate will not do. Mine is either covered in paint or electronics. Before I start removing things does anyone have a picture of the location so I hopefully narrow it down? Thanks so much!

I believe under the dash, the 2 in frame should have the serial #

Look on the 2"x2" square tube, directly under the steering column, facing the driver. When FFR powder coats their chassis, they skip this spot and stamp the chassis # there. It will start with F5R100 - then your frame number - and end with RD

Thanks guys... I have some things riveted onto to tube and I am scared that they are either covering it or when the the frame was painted it covered it. (Mine is not powder coated). Before I start drilling out rivets or worse removing some paint I am trying to narrow exactly where it should be.
Is it on the top, horizontal or bottom of the tube? Left right? Thanks again.

It is on the vertical face just to the left of the steering wheel. It is centered on the face and is about 1/4" tall by 2" long. Probably not where you would mount anything.

Thanks all! Found it! Inspector said that was what he needed but he had to be able to take a picture of it. With the paint over it it was too light. Time to remove a touch of paint...CAREFULLY! Gotta love the DMV! We will see if trip four is successful tomorrow!

1853918540After the fact, but here's the serial # location in my MK3. Use for future reference, as this question comes up frequently. I have to ask, though, was the car previously titled in another state? You said "getting the title transferred over". If was titled in another state, why the need for a new VIN? FWIW, the VIN of my car is exactly what FFR stamped on the frame.

STOP!!!!!!
Before you start removing paint, if you can see any of the number, try wiping some "white-out" or other correction fluid over the spot then gently wipe off the excess. You should be able to highlight the number enough for the DMV to do what they need to without scraping away the paint.

Ray - great minds think alike. I ending up taking a brass wire wheel on my dremel to smooth out the texture of the paint (rust bullet) and then used a permeant marker to darken in the numbers. Frame is painted grey which is one of the reasons it is so hard to see.
It was a FL to NC title transfer. According to the inspector the ID plate would not do as it is not a permanent fixture of the car/// which I do not understand because most VIN plates I have seen are riveted on. They are not issuing me a new VIN... But because I am registering a "Classic/Custom" for the first time in the state of NC it has to be inspected by the theft bureau... Hopefully it will all be good to go tomorrow.

I'm also in NC. Bought my MK3 from a local owner who had bought it from the builder (in Georgia). So I'm not sure what transpired in the title transfer between the two states. Anyway, I have a NC title that indicates the VIN is the same as the FFR number stamped on the frame. Simple. My car is registered as a 1965 year model. If yours is the same, you're in luck compared to what owners in other states go through. I can display a vintage 1965 NC plate (as long as the current plate is in the car). No safety or emissions inspections and NC has the cheapest insurance rates in the nation, I'm told.
Where are you located?

And the saga continued today... Hopefully I am done... Inspector finally accepted the Frame serial number... went to do the paperwork and wouldn't you know one of the numbers was off... a 6 was listed as a 5 on the Florida title... so more paperwork to get that fixed.... but hopefully I will have a title show up in the mail in a few weeks... we will see. The FL title has it as a 1965... the were talking about changing it to a 2013 custom but with everything they forgot to do it so it should be like yours,.. a 1965 Replica... fingers crossed!

"I am located up in Fayetteville... Just south of Raleigh!"
If you get up to Raleigh, the local Cobra Club meets monthly (Saturdays) at Hardee's on Creedmoor Road just north of Crabtree Mall. We usually have a dozen cars show up and ~20 interested parties/owners/builders. Shoot me a PM if you're interested in the details.

I would fight to keep it a 65. You never know where you will end up in the future and a required emissions test could be expensive.
