Arizona MVD just loves Factory Five Racing. The process I used took less than an hour and costs less than $100. Best of all no DOT standards to meet, no smog testing every year and you can even register for more than one year! Here is how to do it:
1. Work out all of your mechanical issues in the go-cart stage and before the body goes on.
2. Get a 3 day ($4.00) restricted permit for going to and from MVD only. Get it on Friday and its good to Wednesday OR
Get a 30 day unrestricted permit ($15).
Only 3 three day permits per year per vehicle. Only one 30 day permit per year per vehicle.
3. At the MVD inspection station fill out a Special Serial Number Application. Vehicle type is replica, year is 1965, make is Shelby, style is RD. Complete the Owner statement as to how you built it (FFR complete kit plus engine, trans, diff.)
4. Take the FFR MSO, invoices for the major parts, drivers license, a few checks and some cash.
5. IMPORTANT: with the MSO use the engraved FFR # on the frame. If you must use the FFR vin plate you MUST affix it with rivets before you go to MVD. Cover up or delay installing any "after market" vin plates.
6. MVD will then match the MSO to the engraved frame number and then tie that number to the Arizona number that MVD assigns to the car. If they don't do this then it is a bonded title and costs ten times more.
7. MVD then glues on their tag ( I put it on the frame below the steering wheel. Do NOT let them cover up the FFR engraved number.
8. You will be asked what the value is (thus the invoices). I told them $25,000.
9.Take the MSO, Application and any other paperwork to the MVD front desk, or to a third party provider.
10. Registration then is issued, a title is generated and you can get the plates.
11. Historic Vehicle plates are available for $25 more (all copper and really cool) See ARS 28-2484 E, 3 as the car "retains at least the basic original body style as manufactured 25 years ago."
12. Mount the plate, put the registration in the car and TAKE A DRIVE!!!!!!!!!
13. No smog test. No DOT requirements to meet (but see ARS 28-924 to 965 for general road worthy requirements that any inspector might require. Mine did not.

Desert Cobra,

I'm so glad you had a near perfect experience with your MVD. I did not. I'm not going to complain about the system. Actually, my experience was not that bad. It did take a little longer than yours. I was hoping that after hearing the variations on people's experiences, I would not fall into the "bad" category when I went. I did not follow my buddies advice and go to the more experienced locations (registering Cobras). I trusted my local one to do the job. Got my temp registration at the MVD (can't do it online without a VIN - $1.).

The person who processed my paperwork had never done this. During the "inspection" they asked me if it was a coupe. That was the extent of the inspection. We went back inside the office. The problem I had was the person registered mine as a 2013 vehicle but everything else was correct on the title (could not talk them out of it!). I called back after I got home and related it to a supervisor. I was told to come back in the morning and another title would be issued. This time it was designated as a 1965 SHELB. So if someone asks if it is a real Shelby, I will say, "the state of Arizons says it is". I also got an interesting comment from the lady who straightened the issue out. She said she had a refund for me. I asked how much and she said $250, So all I can say is God bless the state of Arizona! I did ask if I could register for multiple years and was told no. I did not follow that up. As of this writing, I am in good standing with AZ as a 1965 Shelby SPCON which is the way it should be.

BTW, during my registration process I had several people question me about the car even though it is not painted yet. It draws attention like a topless dancer at a church social. I would have to agree with you that AZ does love FFR but you just have to get the right person to process your paperwork. I hope I may have actually given someone registering an FFR after me a little help because I know my MVD won't forget what happened any time soon. Thanks, WEK.

Sounds like the process has not changed in the last 13 years. Actually getting smoother.

Has anyone recently registered a GTM in Arizona? If so, I'm interested in the process since the GTM isn't a replica. I'm assuming this process would be the same for an 818.

Thanks!

I did a GTM about 6 months ago and it went very smoothly just like the roadsters.

Gordon,

Was it registered as a 2013 FFR GTM? Or do we have a special category for kit cars? The main reason I'm asking is for emissions purposes. If it's registered as a standard 2013 model year car, it will require emissions in a few years...

Thanks!

This is great info! I just finished installing my under-car exhaust (thank you Stainless Headers!), so I am just about ready to get my Roadster on the road. I am in Tucson -- where are you?

Desert Cobra,
Glad you had a positive experience like several of us have had over the years in AZ. I don't understand though, how you were able to obtain either a 3 or 30 day temporary tag as explained in your item number 2, when the state assigned VIN wasn't issued until AFTER you got the car to the MVD facility in your step number 6?
I ask as every temporary tag I've ever got in AZ began by giving the VIN.
Thanks,
Will

Will: You can get a three day permit to take a car to and from MVD, with perhaps a little extra driving on the way there. Again weekends don't count so Friday gets you two extra days. Only a third party provider can issue the permit if you do not have a VIN. When I tried to put in the FFR number on line it just said NO, but in a government way. Same with the 30 day. On line with FFR number you just get a NO. Third party providers are authorized by MVD to do all types of car title work, including giving you a plate, but they cannot do the first inspection required by DMV to tie the FFR number to an Arizona "Reference Number". You will have a small Arizona blue on silver plate (1"X1.5") that ties the FFR number to your Arizona plate number. I had them put the Arizona plate next to the FFR number on the 2x2 cross member below the steering wheel and dash. Do not (in my opinion) cover the FFR number with the Arizona plate. They just glue it on and tell you to rivet it on yourself. There are two little marks on it where you drill and rivet. It also has a anti-tamper tab on it so once it is stuck on you cannot remove it without messing it up. After the plate is glued on by MVD you can go to the counter at MVD and get the license plates or to a third party provider and they can issue a title and give you plates.:) Hope this helps!

David: I am in Tucson as well. I will probably take my roadster to cars & coffee on Sept. 14, Oro Valley Classics Sept 21 and Tucson Classics Oct. 19. Stop by and say hi.

Desert Cobra - Thanks for directing me to this thread (from over at cc). I'll hopefully take the trip to the DMV within the next month or so. See you on the road this summer.

Great not to have any problems with the DMV or MVA as we call it in Maryland. My Roadster was already built and registered. Its registered as a 1965 Ford. I opted for the "Street Rod" registration and plates. There was no inspection! They handed me the plates and I walked out the door. I was concerned because it doesn't have windshield wipers.... I think the key here is it's registered as a 1965 Ford.

I thought hummm. I could walk out and stick these plates on a top fuel dragster and drive it around? No one ever even saw the car....

Since I have a place in Arizona in addtion to my place in Rochester, NY, I may give some real thought to hauling it out there and registering in AZ. This sounds a whole lot easier than NY.

That is a great idea! From what I have read, NY is a major pain.

Just to further clarify a point about the temp permit in AZ: you can also get one at the MVD in person. The on line process does not allow it for obvious reasons (with no VIN#) but if they can verify your paper work at the MVD, they will issue you one. I added this because some may be in a more rural area and this lets you take care of all phases of the process in one location. Just requires an extra trip. I'm only 5 miles away from ours and it's on the way to other daily trips anyway.

Thanks,

WEK.
