The guys are working hard getting ready for Open House and its cool to see the 818 production start up. 24 months ago, we had sketches and a design contest. Today, after a tremendous amount of work, we are building an all-new car. Can't wait to show you guys our best work at Open House on Saturday.

I like! Very nice changes to the front openings, the headlight fit and no holes through the hood. I'll add hinges and a latch, somehow, to my hood.
But hey, was the "Weight is the Enemy" sign intended for my beer gut?
Wish I could be there for the Open House!!

It does look quite good in white. Ahh! I can't wait! Someone should get a tripod and take pics of the car from 2' off the ground all the way around, then link the photos in a flash player so you can click and drag left/right to spin the car.

I really like the look of the faux brake cooling vents this car is now displaying. I'm assuming that the smaller functional vent slots are still hiding under the spiffy plastic covers. Will somebody get down close and have a peek during the open house? Of course, it could be that cutting out the vent slot will be something that is builder-optional.....

It reminds me of the BMW Z4, except instead of clumsily ending in the door handle, it integrates perfectly with the vent! One of my favorite design cues on the car!

just about the same size as a 2nd generation Miata... 818 is a bit wider
Exterior
Width: 66.0 in.
Height: 48.4 in.
Length: 155.3 in.
Ground clearance: 4.0 in.
Curb weight: 2299 lbs.
Wheel base: 89.2 in.
My 8.5 x 16 trailer can handle a Miata and my RM1 Rotax DD2 kart too... shouldn't be any problem with the 818!

The top part with holes might be aluminum, the rest looks like steel. Aluminum doesn't usually get the bluing near the welds. It looks like the entire front is bolt on and replaceable. It was mentioned there were crumpled zones. I'm guessing that the holed part crumples and limits damage to the front steel radiator frame and not the main frame.

The crank window was off track so every time it rained it smelled like an old dog. Who cares what you drive. In fact F5R was created to assist people like us realize affordable excitement. Wheels are anthracite and not black. Rear bubbles are carbon fiber :D
I'm a little puzzled at how the bubbles can be carbon fiber. Don't they come from the same mold as the rear deck that they are sitting on?

Same thing I was thinking. Carbon vinyl? Stick on pieces?

Or the whole decklid is CFRP and the humps were not painted?

This car has not been painted. It's done in gelcoat, which is sprayed into the mold before the fiberglass is laid. That's what makes this so interesting -- and puzzling. Could they have laid the carbon fiber into the hump portion of the molds before spraying in the gelcoat?

Yup that's what I meant! :)
Especially if you're just laying one layer of pre-preg carbon it's not 'that' hard.
Could be a simple cover too..

I wonder if the rear decklid is a 2 part assembly with the humps bonded onto the deck?

Depending on the price, I will elect for that option regardless of how it's made. If it's more than a couple hundred dollars extra though I'll just mask off the areas around the hump and Plastidip paint those sections.

Since there is other stickers on the car, and there's been talk here on the forum of vinyl wraps ect. I'll go out on a limb and say its CRFP. Unless its done in two parts then bonded together. Guess we'll find out soon enough. Wish I was there.

I'm sure a ton of people are going to ask for your deets so we can gauge how a person of a certain size fits in the car.........so.......as you're clearly not a chick and shouldn't be offended by the question........there shouldn't be a problem asking for your weight, height, waist & chest measurements, etc, etc should there? :D
Please post more pics if you have them. Any detailed shots of the interior? I'm curious how the interior/frame to body gaps are dealt with on the car and how "OE" it looks on the street version. The Cobra's as recent as the MK3 were pretty rough in this regard.
It does have a bit of that Lotus Elise look inside doesn't it?.....and to me that's a good thing! I'm sure a few people will get creative with the e-brake and shifter implementation to improve the appearance of those 2 items.
Can you imagine what this thing will look like with CarbonFiber door skins & dash, and everything else exposed, riveted aluminum?

Hopefully those shiny metal pieces on the body such as the gas cap and whatever those fittings are will be optional in black. I don't like how those look.

I am 5'10 185 34w. The shiny parts are aluminum and that is there color, no option yet since I payed for mine today. Carbon options, powder the usual

Windshield wiper option on this car? Hate to add them to ruin these clean lines put they are necessary in most states.....

Are all the "Vents" Stickers on the 818S on display? Or did they actually take the time to cut them out properly. I'm not a fan of "Fake" vents.
metalmaker12

They are all real vents, the car looked great and was about 90 percent done. The parts fit very well and it is a blank canvas for us to paint, mod, etc. the carbon was resined in for the rear bubbles and looked great. The wheels were 18 rear and 17 front. Both were 8" wide and had 40 series tires

MM do you have any pics of the door cards with the door open? What's your opinion on she parking brake and shifter. Both look very tall ? If that makes since. In the pic . Also are the aluminum panels whats being provided for interior parts? Also any pics of the latches they used on the hood, deck and truck. Provided? I assume everything is lift off?

You could always cut down the shift lever and re-thread for the knob I guess. Personally, I prefer a taller/closer to the steering wheel shifter with a short throw and positive feel.

The shifter is high, but feels likes its perfect driver placement, and it is a nice sweet short throw. The aluminum interior panels are what you get, but they are cool as is or easy to mod up, wrap, paint, powder or do whatever you want. Lets all get unique here. I got a color scheme idea I might do and a custom interior.

Wipers and heater are in the works
car "fits" well, many sizes. Trade off Dave described for longer seat travel by changing tank design/capacity should help wookies big time
cockpit is larger than any of their other cars
white works great esp with the carbon fiber pieces and some graphics...
the interior alumin needs some upholstery, should be pretty simple to do
I don't like the AL panel over the top edge of the door, will get too hot in the sun etc...
Can't wait to get mine in Early August
Got to talk to Jesper, Jim, Dave and spent tons of time with Eric T... He's driving south with 004 and 005 (GRM and his) Wednesday! With some creativity he's getting both into his 8 x 18 enclosed trailer!!!
Kit "package" looks very manageable 5-6 boxes and the frame and AL panels temp attached with body attached... Should be very easy for self pickup.
The AL panels were not installed in the trunk... :-( Simple exhaust for WRX turbo, short adaptor (not belmouth tho... business opportunity here???) and stock downpipe w/cat... short dump down through the tail
I didn't take pictures, my daughter had the camera at a graduation.
creative mirror soln for side mirrors, take apart the wrx mirror, they bolt to flat stock where the door mounts, nice and stiff... looks great vs the model shown at SEMA with the hacked up triangle area...
Metalmaker12, sorry we didn't connect... I left at 1PM with my 818 tee shirt to hold me off until the next time I travel down to Wareham in August!!!

No front to back or side to side #'s/... I should have slid over and peeked
Yes bought a $20 tee, black with 818R on it, white and red screen printing, just like many of the workers/employees were wearing
