I found a 2002 WRX with a smashed front and rear end that still drives like it was new. I'll be taking the title from the previous owner, but do I need to transfer it into my name? I was digging around on the MN DMW website and found this. The way I'm reading it, I don't think I need to but wanted to get other people's opinion.

Look over the car real close before you waste too much time. I have purchased 2 wrx both light hits that drove like new, both had frames that cracked like glass. I even went as far as to buy the replacement parts. I drove the black one for about 5 miles, up to 60mph, tracked straight, felt great. Went on lift and the frame was cracked with thin hair like cracks all over the place. This was a light hit to where the only thing damaged was the bumper. I checked the Blue one (harder hit) sure enough same frame type damage just much more noticable.

I'm pretty sure you don't need to retitle the car in your own name unless you are planning to drive wrx on the street yourself. If you are only going to use it as a donor, the 818 that it turns into will be separately titled. But DO transfer the title if you are going to drive the donor!

To be safe, check with MN DMV for the opinion that matters.

Not living in MN I am not sure what the motor vehicle code says but I would give them a call explaining your project and get their input.

If your specialty car registration is anything like here in Calif. you might want to get input from the hwy patrol too.

My post only applies if you plan to fix/drive it till your 818 is ready. Here in MA a copy of the title does the trick if your are just using the parts only.

If it were me I would probably do it. I doubt you will have to license it so it really shouldn't cost too much. I just feel it will be easier to do now than if you would have to after you disassemble it. It looks like it will cost about $20.
