Fuel Tank

I, like some others have purchased an alternative fuel tank. I am trying to figure out what to do with the one supplied in the kit. I hate to just throw it away. Is F5 interested in purchaseing for a small fee as I guess they could sell it in future kits?

I have not come up with a good use for the original tank but scrap metal is back on it's way up again and it should be worth 58 cents real soon.
The Boyd's Welding tanks are proving to be a good option and a couple dozen have been purchased to date. The guy's at Boyd's do a Great job!

What to do with the old tank? Cut the top out of it, drill some drain holes in the bottom and use it for a flower pot! Put it in a prominent location where you will see it every day as a constant reminder.

I got one from Boyds as well. Nice unit and some chnages were addressed to relocate the sender flange and such. My old one makes a good "converstaion piece" with the toilet lid mounted to it ....

Well, for those of us who have the car almost finished and did not even know there was a better tank solution, has anyone figured out a way to solve the total cluge of a tank fill hose problem? It takes 15 minutes to fill my tank, because you can't flow any volume at all thru that hose, because of the angles and very slight elevation drop.

My tank fills ok, on the lowest preset on the fuel hoses at the gas pumps and made the following mods. Changed the angle of the fitting welded in the tank, (to horizonal) and installed a big bore vent from Breeze automotive Part # 70648. You could try to modify the supplied vent by taking it apart and drilling out the vent hole as large as possible. I know that will help but the vent from Breeze will work better.

Since you said it takes 15 minutes to fill the tank, I presume it has had gas in it. That means any mods you do to it now will be equivalent to working on a bomb. You have to be extremely careful if you want to do any cutting or welding on that tank now. A thorough cleaning and an inert gas (argon, nitrogen, CO2 etc) purge will be required. Do NOT weld or cut on that tank until you are absolutely certain it is inert. OR:

Call Boyd Welding and order one of his aluminum tanks with his DOT approved roll over valve. Boyd can also supply a 0-90ohm sending unit that seals to the tank with a gasket and stainless screws instead of the Ford locking ring and square shouldered O-ring. You will need an Autometer 0-90ohm fuel gauge (#1409 @ Summitt I think) to match the rest of the kit gauges. Yes, it will cost some $$ but you will not have trunk hinges hitting, no leaks at the sending unit or pickup and you will be able to fill it with ease and that the thing won't leak or rupture in a crash. Oh yeah, and a little peace of mind as well.

Just my opinion.

Now that your tank has had fuel in it, any cutting or welding on it would be extremely dangerous. In my opinion, you should dump that tank and get one from Boyd Welding. It will fit, it will fill, no hinge interference, no sending unit or pickup leaks and it is built with heavy gauge aluminum and is tough as nails. Oh yeah, and it's way more pretty.

And Jim, thx to you too, but like Racerboy says, I am beyond welding-LOL! I guess I am stuck with it, though a friend of mine suggested building an inner hose that slides into the fill spout and fits snugly around the fuel nozzle.

I mounted my filler on top of the body and reconfigured the hose so it's pretty straight shot. There's still an elbow, but I can fill at about half throttle so it reasonable at least. I also drilled out the vent so the air opening was bigger.

I gave up and bought the tank from Boyd. I have the large vent kit that Breeze sells if someone is interested in it. I struggled to get the steel tank out with body on. It was hitting against the wheel arch. I finally broke out the sawzall and took corner off tank. (Never had fuel it so no big deal) The Boyds tank slides in easily. Another plus is I installed battery in stock location (Optima I got it to fit) I can not easily but now possible be able to pull fuel tank down the road or at minimum loosen to be able to remove battery if I can't get it out access pannel or from under the car. The Boyds tank belongs in the kit. I will give the steel tank to buddy building rat rod. He can weld the corner back on and modify fill to fit his needs.
