View Full Version : Baggage Space

With a relocated battery (one of the smaller ones), has anyone looked into using the space above where it went for a small bin? Only concern would be cooling for the radiator. Thoughts?

Sorry for my lack of art skills.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I think you could easily build a bin inside that space. Even if it only holds a bag of groceries or a duffle bag, that's more than we would have without using that space.
I also think we are going to be able to do the same in the rear, but the space will be larger. Between the 2 of them, I think it will have decent storage space (for a 2 seat sports car, that is!).

Don't forget that if you resist the urge to do a (currently faddish) raised center exhaust, the area over the gearbox should be fairly large and would only need a horizontal sheet of fiberglass or aluminum to make a good luggage space.

Good idea.

With the revised rear hatch it makes sense to put a baggage area over the tranny. I was thinking of routing the exaust over the tranny like is the current fad but centering the exaust center rear still has my attention.

I'm hoping a luggage bin will be part of the S kit. Why else would FFR hinge this panel:
18110
It doesn't access the motor, only the empty space over the tranny.

Exactly what I am planning!

I hope so too. Even if not, I think it would be easy enough to tackle on one's own.

Uhh... thats an air brake :p
Another thing that i havent seen mentioned is the center storage thing behind your right elbow when driving. Maybe just modify one from an s2000 or a miata
(s2000's)

That's where I'm planning to mount a fire extinguisher.

I'll have to look at the center storage in relation to the space available in the cabin and the location of the shifter. I have long arms and have smacked my elbow on things in that location in other cars. Not fun...
BUT it's a GREAT idea! :)

Yeah, i think that is something that you will have to wait and get the seat and shifter in then test out how much room you have before installing it. I just checked on ebay and they are around $100 so not bad and they come with a cigarette lighter port thingy If you could wire it up

"I'm hoping a luggage bin will be part of the S kit. Why else would FFR hinge this panel?"
To get to the oil dipstick is one reason. Many 818 builders will innovate solutions to the storage question. I don't expect FFR to add any storage compartment but I expect to see several guys create space and then a vendor or two will likely offer something. In the roadster the trunk is decent but guys have come up with many ways to expand it and at least a couple of venders sell kits for the trunk including a battery box below the trunk floor. American innovation will solve this.

I don't mind some custom fab work and/or aftermarket parts, but I'm hoping some sort of compartment is included. FFR changed the rear deck from a single piece with hood pins in the prototypes, to a two piece hinged mechanism for production. I don't think checking the oil level necessitates that level of engineering, and I'm sure the motivation was clearly to allow easy access to a storage location (how nice this is fitted out is still TBD)
The front area is where some custom solutions can open up more storage, as it's clear there won't be any accommodation there in the base kit. I'm thinking of putting a mount for the space saver spare in front (if it doesn't block the radiator outlets), since I got it from my donor and will be running stock (06) brakes.

That opening on the rear wont let you check the dipstick. That is on the front passenger side of the engine

Oops, rjh2pd is correct. I checked my EJ255 to see that the dipstick is at the front of the engine, driver side. Sorry.

I've been wondering about routine oil checks since the reveal. Will we have to remove the engine cover to do routine checks? Can the dipstick tube be modified to make access easier? Will the rear hatch hinge to be able to lift the engine cover and cargo area independently? Guess we'll find out in two weeks.
