View Full Version : A better way to mount the air conditioner?

So Dad finally gave me the go ahead to ask some questions with a photo attached.
The previous owner had a custom (and decidedly odd) checkerplate box coming out of the bulkhead to enclose the ac. It made us both concerned so we took it out. So as we start to clear away what was there for what we would like, we discussed that there has got to be a better way to do the AC in this....anyone have experience in moving this? Or modifying it?
I don't see the AC sticking out of that cover in most finished gtms, so it feels like we're just plain missing something.

(as a side note, the coolant tubes are yet to be hard plumbed in, those speaker wires won't be featured lol, and the AC unit needs proper lines, those ones on it are not our addition;))

So are you asking about the compressor or the evaporator/heater core unit?

If you are asking about the compressor....I can tell you that I have never seen a build where it was not located on the lower RH side of the engine in a C5 stock position.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but looking at this picture leads me to suggest that you start over in this area and use the manual to make it "functional" or more in line with FFR's original intentions.

No offense taken, it was like that when we got it and I pretty much suspected it was as you say.
It does seem like there is a lot to go through and change, and there is a LOT of backtracking, he bought some very, very good parts, but the assembly fell off a bit when he divorced.
It's a lesson I have learned through him, leave emotion at the door when you go to work on your gtm, failing that, take a
day off!
At any rate, I am relieved to hear it's as simple as that.
Guess you guys know what we'll be doing in the next bit;)

I agree with all above, except the lesson youv'e learned. I think your missing the true lesson, throw away your reciepts.

If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing.......how did the waterfall ever fit on there? Looks to me like you'd have to cut a clearance hole in the driver's seat for the AC compressor pulley.

That's how we got it....I dunno either, you know what gets me? The guy also built a kit plane.
And this sort of thing is one of the reasons we've been holding off a build thread, since it would be like this:

day # 126 today i realized the old owner used household wire connectors for such and such, so today I stripped them and put in proper ones.

But you know, on the other hand, the engine is a brand new crate engine, the brakes are veined, slotted, and vented, the wheels are absolutely the nicest I have seen, the interior is covered from all angles in a thick, rich leather, and possibly smells of mahogany (okay I made up the mahogany part)...

So it's not all boggins, just that much of it needed to be looked at, assessed and either redone, or cleaned up a bit.
A fuel line with 6 extra connectors and many pieces of fuel line instead of one clean line, was one of the more interesting things...well, until this gem.
My fav is the added light he installed to shine on a ladies legs when in the passenger seat, truly a unique addition ;)

Again, if you are thinking of buying a gtm partly built, this is a possible outcome, and yes, as a matter of fact, it is a pain in the ***,
but the price the old man paid for it would make you weep, and when it's done, it will be done right.
