Car looked good overall except the rad had pushed the fan motor into the belts. Also the passenger side cam housing was crashed where I could see and move some metal parts inside. I assumed this is to be avoided.

Or????

Thanks for the input

Sounds like there's a good chance the timing belt or cam gears were damaged in the crash. And if that's the case you're almost guaranteed bent valves. I would say it's overpriced if there's serious damage to the motor. Could make a good donor if you're ok with rebuilding the motor or sourcing a different one, provided the seller is willing to come down quite a bit in price. FWIW I paid over $2k less for a low mileage '02
in a pretty similar condition (timing belt damage from front crash)

$3800 might not be a bad price *IF* the engine were running. As it sits, I'd be worried the engine would need too much additional investment to fix, making this a less than ideal donor. You could offer him a small amount for all OTHER the parts you need (i.e. minus the engine & radiator). Given he'd be keeping a lot of interior bits, doors, body panels, etc., he might go for it. Those parts look OK and there is decent money to be in had in selling them. That would leave you only engine & radiator to source. You might have to leave him the wiring ECU & harness as well, but it's prob best if you get those with the engine anyway.

An 04 WRX sold on CoPart three days ago, for $2650. It was rear ended, the trunk was pushed in a bit it didn't look to bad from the pictures, and had the run/ drive sticker on the site. Some lucky guy in Montana had the winning bid. I'm still kicking myself for not bidding, I don't know why I'm watching these auctions, I won't be ready to get commited for another two years. Just a glutton for punishment I guess. LOL.

It might be worth a look, if it's close by. There won't be any auction fees ect. Just sales tax and registration(non-op). Make sure you stick to what you think it's worth, and be willing to walk. These Craigslist guys ask way more than what the cars are worth.

That has most definitely been my experience as well.
