(of course I'm a little "Old School") it would have a King Cobra body (Cooper Monaco) on it. Real cool front end - back end is a little funky - maybe update it a little. I think I'd have to have one then - after I finish my Roadster!

not a bad idea but i'm hoping for something a little more modern, the KC is a little too rounded for me. it someone could come up with a design that took that idea and made it more modern like you suggested, it would be cool. I would try but i have no design skills

Maybe I'll have to draw something up - have art degree - work as an engineering consultant. I'm probably the only one that really digs that car though!

I dig it too ... a lot!
that car is also one of my favs, so If it was up to me I'd go with a King Cobra Replica or a Lotus 23B:
King Cobra:

cool car, but it's not up to you and this is not in line with what FFR wants to achieve with this car.

I think you missed the "IF" part, but thanks for straightening me out!

I do like the lotus, Always been a fan of the 23B, but I'm hoping for something with a real windshield at minimum, hopefully a removable roof as well. And even though those are both classic designs that will always look good, i think this car should have a more modern look to it.

I wonder if a King C***a replica body can be dropped on a modified GTM frame? If so, I can see FFR doing one at a later time. The problem with mid-engined V8s, and likely the genesis of the 818, is the cost of a proper transaxle. A KC replica would need to be a "high dollar" deal (like the GTM) for this reason.
A Lotus 23 is more inline with this project. Whatever it ends up looking like, it's spirit is in the same vein as the Lotus. "Add lightness", somebody smart once stated that.

Thanks for the pics on the KC. The fact that it isn't up to us is beside the point. You have to keep asking if you want to affect the outcome. I think I like it as much as the GT40 or better! I agree that the design could be updated a little. The above image of the Lotus is pretty HOF to me. But anything in between could be OK. I just hope Dave and FFR don't ignore the continued plea to bring the exciting look to the street version with some consideration down the line for a real coupe or Targa to get that segment of the people who want it or have to have it due to environment. If they keep the customer's desires in mind, I'm sure there will be a happy group when it happens. If they stick too close to the home grown design like the R version, that would be sad to say the least. I'm trying to stay optimistic and patient at the same time. It's painful! WEK.

As a member of the not quite 30 crowd (give me 5 months) I'm not a fan of the king cobra or that first lotus. They just seem outdated to me. Granted, they were already old by the time I was born and even average sports/sporty cars looked more advanced to me.
I'd rather have it look more agressive with sharply defined features (ala porsche 918, lotus 7-11, Ferrari F430, etc) than swoopy and bubbly.

John Cooper ( I own 3 classic Mini Coopers) and Carol Shelby ( I have a 65 cobra 427 replica) are two of my greatest Hero's, so having a Cooper King Cobra would be a dream come true to me.

I was in the pits at Riverside back in the late 50’s or early 60’s and a Cooper Monaco with a 2.5 Climax enging came in for a pit stop and pulled a wheel stand leaving the pits. I hope I never forget that.

I think the body design should reflect the newer modern heart and soul that will be powering the chassis. I'm all for the older cobra look but I don't think it fits well with what motor/tranny they are using for it.
I personally won't buy one if it was styled after something from the 60-70s. FFR already has enough of those styles in their stable...

I'm more than a decade older and I'm with you - the looks of the KC do nothing for me.

I'm hoping with all the talk about developing this car and the body in CAD with rapid prototyping tech that they will be able to update the body or release new body versions on a more regular basis. I'd love to have a few more options for the body style and frankly, retro sells.
I'm not entirely into the King Cobra look but hey, a 70's lotus Espirt or a Lancia Stratos body option could easily sell this car to an entirely new demographic, especially with the goal of being a "World Car". A Stratos or Classic Lotus design would likely sell 2:1 but I wonder about the legality of it.

Classic only sells currently because those interested in classics are those in the demographic able to dump $30k into a toy. The $15k demographic is more than likely a younger crowd who may or may not be into classics as much. Most of my car friends (quite a few of them) are mostly in the upper 20 to lower 30 range and while they can appreciate a classic, have no desire to have one.
I think it would be cool to have the car look like a lemans protype.

True, I just meant for the European geezers who grew up with a different set of legends. They still have money to spend and might spring for a Group-B replica or Euro Le-Mans champion rather than something that started the American Muscle Car revolution and resulted in the giant split between American Motorsports and what the rest of the world does with cars...
Just dreaming.

In my view, there are not very many good looking classic mid enginecars. Most of the best looking classics had the engine in fron of the driver. This King Cobra, in my opinion, it not easy on the eyes. An exception for me is the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale:
11765
I also like the Miura a lot, but not so much its front, through, only front the front wheels back. The Miura has a long front hood, making it look like it carries the engine up front.
11766
When I did my design, I attempted to take cues from these two cars.
The GT40 is also an obvious exception, but there are many GT40 replicas out there. I don't think that Factory 5 was looking to make another classic replica.

What about the 60's vintage Ferrari Dino, or the classic Porsche 550 Spyder? And of course, the modern Boxster/Cayman? I love ALL of those........

The Dino was a good looking car, but I much prefer this modern take on it:
11815
In contrast, I tend to prefer sheet metal on classic front engine cars to their moden counterparts (Camaro, Corvette, Datsun Z, Dodge Charger, Jaguar E-type, etc.)
The Porsche 550, in my opinion, looks like a suppository.
The lines on that modern Dino rendering are wicked. I would own that in a second. Unfortunately I think we need to lower expectations.

True. Wicked lines or not, FFR is not interested in replicating somebody else's car on the 818 project -- and particularly not a replica of a modern design. Lawsuits are expensive, even when you win. I suspect that 818 iteration #1 will look pretty much like the shape they let us see a couple of months back. And that will be good enough to get me to pony up my money.

That's essentially a Ferrari 360 with a grill.
They should have been more forward thinking. Look at the new Mclaren p12 and you have an idea of the direction they should have gone, not 5 year old styling...

I don't know about that. I rather like the mix of classic and modern styling.

I'm not suggesting that they should use this design, only that their own design could have been so much better. They had 750? design contest entries. Many of them smoking hot, yet they chose to stay with Jim's design. My opinion is that it was a money decision, bringing one of the contest designs to reality would have taken substantial money and time. They already had a full size mock-up of Jim's. I live and work in the real world, sometimes what you may want to do is not what is best financially for the company. Or the whole design contest was a marketing ploy, and they intended to use Jim's design all along.
P.S. I do find it interesting that while Jim of course had access to the chassis dimensions and could make his fit from the start. They refused to give out the dimesions to the contest designers, ensuring that nobodies design would fit out of the gate.
