View Full Version : Why design a car without ANY luggage capacity

Just wondering why anyone would design any vehicle without the ability to carry even the most modest of overnight bags. I love the GTM except for the fact that there is no place to store a couple of overnight bags, which relegates the vehicle to a zip around towner. I'm not talking a full trunk here, but even Ferrari have slots made that accommodate their custom luggage.
I have studied the specs on the GTM and so far haven't found any place where a small compartment could be built.
Anyone else have this beef or am I alone on this one.

Yes, I always felt the same way. However there is room that could be converted to carry space behind the rear wheels. You could build two storage compartment there, you would have to change the stock exhaust or even make access panels in the fenders like they are starting to do in the new pickup trucks. Just a thought. :-)

Look at the area behind those rear tires.. Lotsa space there - just need to figure out a way to access it..
The GT40 had luggage boxes behind its rear tires.

There is always the rear deck and a luggage rack.. I've seen plenty on Corvettes over the years..

Learn to travel like a professional road warrier. I used to be on airplanes all the time for my job and quickly learned that being flexable meant to never, never, ever check baggage. I am now able to pack for any amount of time into one backpack type computer bag (including my computer and charger). All hotels have laundry rooms and I make good use of them. I was always travelling to visit customers and never would see the same customer more than once in a trip, so it did not matter that my shirt and tie looks exactly the same on Tuesday as it did on Monday. When problems with a flight occured, I could scan the board to see what planes were flying "close enough" or to a large hub and get onto that plane since they did not have to deal with checked baggage re-routing. I can't tell you how many times I ran down the jetway, boarded the plane and had the door immediately closed behind me.
How much luggage space is there in a motorcycle?

Because a trunk is kinda useless in these cars for the majority of people? I'd much rather have the extra room to have plenty of room to be able to work freely and reach everything with ease (as opposed to needing crowfoot wrenches, wobble extensions, and 10001 other weird tools) than space for luggage.

AZ, speaking of cup holders, I was once told back in the day VW didn't include them, a car was to be driven, it wasn't about comfort and convienience but about driving. This from the company that had the popular ads of Farfegnugen. Which is the English language rendering of the German word "Fahrvergnügen", which means the "Pleasure of driving".

I knew I was going to get the response about "pure" driving and all that. And in fact my bike has Touratech panniers which hold 40 liters each, enough for two overnight bags....eye brow lift, don't think a car like the GTM would suit a luggage rack, in fact I know it wouldn't. But thanks for the suggestion. And I just noticed a couple of places where you may be able to build small storage, just wondering if anyone has done it. And a cup holder or two sure would be appreciated during a cross country drive in this thing, and maybe a place to keep a change of underwear even...lol

Google for vids or pics of the McLaren F1. Very creative use of space for storage. Essentially, the panels behind the doors open to compartments. Seemingly very adapatable to the GTM if done at the same time as the body work.

A friend of mine who I surf with brought his budy from France down to FFR and asked me to take him out in one of the cars. Usually I'll take a customer out on the 90 mph parking lot drift in the roadster... This time though I reached for the GTM keys. Maybe I was feeling a bit patriotic, maybe I was having a bad day... anyway, I strapped him in and we headed out at a pedestrian pace, drove a few-ten miles till tires and engine were good to go. As we accelerated on the merge ramp to 195 east (heading back to Wareham), I dropped the hammer on the beast. The poor guy literally FREAKED out, he was frightened out of his mind, screaming like a little girl as I drove in let's say, a bit more "aggressive" manner than I am used to.
I can promise you that to this day when he sees or thinks of Factory Five, the last thought in his head is of luggage space. Thats why.
Seriously, there aint much space for luggage. Russ is right, there are a few places you can steal some cargo space (very little), but there's the lap and feet of your passenger and thats about it.

If we can get this into the roadster, you can get underwear changes, toothbrushes and a digital camera (what else is needed for an adventure?) into the GTM. Wish we are going with you!
