I'm about to start cruising the local pick-a-parts looking for a 1999-2004 mustang e-brake assembly. How easy are these to remove? Do I need any special tools or is a common set of wrenches and screwdivers enough? Maybe some pliers, too.

Without ever doing this, I assume all I need to do is pull out some of the center console, take off the cables (are these under tension that I need to be worried about?), and unbolt the assembly. Anything hidden that will be an issue?

Thanks in advance,

99-04 consoles are pretty easy to remove for access to the handle/cable.

The shift bezel is removed first, just pry up on the edges. You'll find two screws at the console to dash mating line. Bring metric sockets!

Open the console storage bin and remove the felt bottom pad or plastic liner and you'll find two more screws there to remove. At this point the parking brake lever is raised as high as it will go (really yank on it) and then pull the shift lever into low gear or 2nd/4th for manual and pull the console up and off the parking brake handle.

Once the console is out of the way the parking brake handle itself is just two bolts on the tunnel (agani, metric). Depending upon how much cable you want/need you'll have to get under the car to disconnect them from the rear calipers and through all of the body mounting holes. Use a 1/2-inch boxed end wrench to collapse the retaining tines on the cables to pull them through the body holes. A big screwdriver will help with getting the cables off the caliper's parking brake linkage.
