Can you order the base kit to receive the IRS kit without ordering it at the same time

Yes, but then you have to rework the chassis to install the IRS cage. Best to order the base kit with the IRS option. Then order the IRS completion kit at a later date.

IRS is absolutely the way to go. I would call FFR to confirm and discuss it some. I wonder what the difference in total dollars might be if you get the completion kit later vs doing it at the same time as the initial order. Also some times a sale will get you a free irs upgrade. As a matter of fact they have a Spring Special going on right now that gets you free irs w/ a complete kit.

I would call them. I bet you could get them to do something w/ irs on a base kit if that is your plan.

IRS is absolutely the way to go. ...if you want comfort over performance.
Don't forget that you are going to be adding some shipping charges doing it seperately. Truck freight is not cheap on large items.

I ordered my MK4 Base kit with the IRS option, then sourced all of the IRS parts myself:
pumpkin (aluminum Lincoln MK8)
diff (Ford Trac-Loc)
gears (3.55)
knuckles ('95 T-Bird w/new bearings, new VPM Poly Bushings, and hubs re-drilled for 4.5 inch lug pattern)
brakes ('92 Lincoln MK7 discs)
brake pads (Hawk HPS pads (580F.627.5618R).
The rear-end and knuckles were built with all new parts and bearings and I added Fortes IRS aluminum mounts.
I thoroughly enjoy my decision to go IRS and highly recommend it.

was it much trouble with the base kit sourcing all the parts you need to finish?

No. Many of the forum vendors provide the necessary parts.
