View Full Version : Period Correct Engine Compartment

I'm deeming my engine and engine compartment done (minus wiring). Now that the carb is dialed in, I finally installed the turkey pan, replaced the plain rubber gas line between the carb feed and the fuel filter with a molded 90* fuel injection piece to avoid collapsing, and finalized the mechanical throttle linkage.

I fired it up again yesterday (three times - because it just sounds so cool), and put it back down on its wheels.

The last two big steps are wiring and body/paint. I think I'm going to shift to bodywork while the weather is still nice, then do the wiring when the body goes out for paint.

Here are a few pics - those with some experience working on first generation ('65 - '66) Mustangs may notice the OEM Ford voltage regulator, solenoid, and other parts. The plan is to graft a reproduction Mustang wiring harness into the FFR harness to finish off the period correct look, as well as make it sort of plug-and-play.

You can add the correct Lucas components to the firewall to make it very convincing. Do a search for Shelby Cobra firewall. It can be non-functional

Chris,

Really nice looking. Owning an original is out of my price range or desire, but owning one that carries the spirit of originality sure is. Thanks for sharing all your secrets so the rest of us can do the same. Carl

I love the original look, I think you should loose the USA sticker on the intake, and I dont know for sure but I don't think the fuel pressure gauge was on the orig , or the chrome fuel line.
THis is not a negative thing was just saying. I prefer the fuel gauge.

I found this statement humorous as most Lucas products I have owned have been non functional even if they weren't supposed to be :)

I agree: functional or not, the Lucas stuff would be a cool period touch. Great work!

I've seen some period correct cars that replicated the original wiring on the Driver's Side firewall, with authentic fuses and all.
(real wiring, fuses, and relays are behind the firewall)
They looked pretty cool, if that's where you're going.

Very nice! My only question/comment: how's the access/clearance to the plugs and header bolts on the DS? Looks tight. Those header bolts need periodic tightening if you have aluminum heads (cant' tell in the photos).

Looks great Chris!!
Not sure what wiring harness you will be using. The Ron Francis unit I got from FFR was very easy to install with tons of pictures and diagrams in the instruction book.
Keep up the great work.

Nothing special... just iron Ford heads that have had a ton of work done inside. The access is not different than any other roadster with those heads and the FFR/BBK headers. The rear three bolts on the DS are a bit of a squeeze, but still very accessible with an open end. Not something I'd do when the engine is hot, though!
