My rear axle seal was leaking so I had to take my rear end apart again.
When at autozone they told me about the replacement bearing that had the seal all in one. Seemed like a good solution, so today was the day of attack.
Was able to pop the seals out no problem, but then the bearings where another story. Looked on you tube and saw the bearing puller tool so went back to Autozone to rent one. Well that was not as easy as the video showed. Must have been edited LOL. Had to basically pull the inner race out and all the bearing rollers. Inadvertantly some off them ended up in the far end of the shaft. so had to get a magnet on a stick to retrieve them.
Went to the passenger side to take that one out. Of course there was the mandatory getting your hand mangled on the garage wall after the bearing popped loose. A few choice action verbs later I was on to the install of the new bearing/seal combo. I was able to get them in, but both of them are sticking out about 1/8- 3/16". The driver side outer seal got mangled when the wood block I was using to drive the bearing in gave way to the outer race
Any ways the bearing needs to sit flush with the outer housing correct?
The bearing also has an outer O-ring to seal against the housing. I was thinking about heating the housing to see if I can get the last little bit in, but I'm worried it is going to ruin the O-ring.
Any suggestions are welcome as my frustration level has me in the house rather than the garage!!!
Thanks,
John
