Hello and what's up? Just wondering if there is any deaf Roadster builder out there in the forum. I am deaf and I just bought a factory Five Roadster, the serial number is 8048! Right now it is sitting in my garage and having a blast by drilling holes! LOL....
Just wanted to let you guys and gals know that I am now a Factory Five family member! I am looking forward to start my build journey until it finish. I am not very good posting pictures or doing a build log, but I will be sure to post if I have questions...
Here is my build plan for the 8048....
428 Cobra Jet Stroker
IRS with 3:55
TKO -600
NON DONOR! A complete brand new parts!
Deep sapphire blue metallic with possibly pearl white stripe will be my ideal color for the roadster!
Take Cares!

Welcome to the forum! I can teach you how to post pics to an album, and Yu have a blog that you can use for a build journal. Or you can create your own thread, it's up to you! We're glad your here, and congrats on your new journey!

In answer to you inquiry, I am not deaf. However, my wife would argue that point. I do have the ability to tune her out and not hear a word she says. Glad to have you here and looking forward to seeing your build progress. Pictures are easy and so are build logs. You'll thank yourself later for keeping a record of your progress and being able to look back and reminisce.

Thank GUYS! I will try my best to post some pictures in the forum. I have been browsing so many different threads and find a lot of valuable informations.
By the way, summer is on the way and I was wondering if you guys have a get together such as car shows or roadster hangout in the New England. Because of that, I would like to introduce myself to the Factory Five family.

On the bright side when you get stopped for your pipes being to loud, you have a pretty darn good excuse. :-)
Welcome aboard. Like Mike, I'm just down the road from you, happy to assist.

As everyone said, take lots of pictures. Eveyone is genuinly interested in each others builds. I have been taking pictures, but have been slack on posting lately. I have just been too busy. You will be suprised at how quickly you will be able to post something to help someone else out.
It looks like you have a nice build planned. Welcome to the family.

Had a deaf friend who I met just as he was getting his on the road and we hung out for about three years until he moved away from the area. Because of an experience he had I will give you a recommendation. have someone ride w/ you. During some go-karts and especially after you are on the road. He ruined his first trans due to lack of oil. Over the period of the build he somehow never filled it up, and since he couldn't hear the noises, he never knew until it was too late. It's also not uncommon to have an unusual noise that is hard to locate, especially in the early days after on the road. Most of the time it is something simple that was overlooked. but if you don't hear it, you don't know of a potential problem. Oh, a recommendation; you might want to re-think that 355 rear gear w/ that big motor. I'd be thinking 308. BTW, if you have a cell phone I can walk you through the picture process using photobucket using text messaging and cell pics if needed.

Hi DeafCobra,
I am not deaf but getting there via rock concerts and loud hot rods! Have lost most of the high frequency range such as the audible cues from your multimeter and those very small windchimes that tinkle. Oh well. Sounds like you have a real monster build going (no pun). I'm curious. If you don't mind saying do you have any licensing limitations? I would think you have to be acutely aware of the visual cues from the emergency vehicles, etc. I am wearing ear plugs while driving mine but still can hear most of the important stuff. Do get a friend to assist you in your test drives and early diagnoses of weird sounds. That may save you a few hundred dollars if you catch a problem early. Looking forward to seeing some of your work! WEK.

Welcome! Isn't open house coming up at FFR? Thats where you need to go my friend.
Welcome to the forum. Great advice on the ride along, I never would have thought about it. Ping Pigfarm70. He's not deaf but his wife is. They are good friends of mine and we get together regularly (not often enough lately though.) He didn't build his car but is planning on doing a '33 for his wife.
Hi DeafCobra! Congrats on starting your journey!
Any chance you were in build school with my Dad and I April 12-14?

WEK..
In the state of RI it does not have any requirement for the deaf. Normally we deaf have three mirrors ( driver, passenger and the rear) which it is sufficent for us. Most of the time we see cars pulling over and we know there is an emergency dispatcher on the road.
Yes I agree with you to have someone to hear the early start, which I have a friend who is a mechanic, and he is willing to assist me to install the motor inside the cobra. He will do the all the tweaking for me.
Thanks

I agree with you 100% about the lack of my hearing. I have a friend who is a mechanic and live down the street. He will be assisting me with the motor and tranny. He is my go to guy with an "ears"! He have been taking cares of our cars and optimize them which it is fine tuning and tweaking anything that related to sound!
I will check it out with 308 rear gear to compare to 355 rear gear... The purpose of the roadster is to be a daily driven, not planning to drag racing or auto crossing. I do not want to risk 55 to 65K for stupid mistake. I just want to enjoy the raw feeling of power and rumbling through my body since I could not hear! But I will sure feel it! LOL!!!!
Thanks
Seth

Having a blast by drilling holes! I am having pre drilled on most on the engine footboxes, fire wall and the "F" panels, so it will be sending out to be powder coat gloss black.
Will be drill more holes in the cockpits and trunk, I loved drilling holes (gee whiz).....:p

Welcome aboard Seth! If you need an extra pair of hands, I'm only about 90 minutes away.
Seeing your writing and the differences in grammar and sentence structure reminded me of how I met a good friend about 10 years ago. I was working in Hartford and would take the bus to and from work. Since my schedule was pretty rigid, I got to see the same people every day on the bus. There was a heavy set guy, with a big handlebar mustache, wearing glasses just a little too big for his face, that would always come right up to me and reach to shake my hand. It wasn't a regular handshake, either. It would start off normal, then turn into something you'd see major league baseball players do after a home run. Since I didn't know this special handshake, it looked as awkward as it sounds. This was accompanied by various grunts and never anything intelligible. I would smile and play along. He would always reach out and pat me on the back when he got off the bus. On the rare occasion that I saw him without the large sunglasses, I saw his eyes were a little dark and watery. I thought he was "special", maybe with a mild case of Down's syndrome. I admired his courage and outgoing nature, and he really seemed to light up when he saw me, so I started sitting with him on the bus. He would occasionally point to a Boston Red Sox logo and then look at me with a big thumbs up, or point to someone's Yankees hat and pinch his nose.
After a couple of weeks, I decided to try to find out more about my new friend. So I pulled out a notepad and wrote "My name is Keith" and handed him the pen and paper. He took it and wrote "My name is John. I'm deaf." Holy crap. What I mistook for a mental handicap was just him trying to say "Hey, how's it going? Good to see you." We continued to write back and forth for the full 30 minutes before and after work for the next week or so. We quickly realized that it wasn't the quickest or easiest way to communicate, so he brought me a book used to teach American Sign Language. I studied the alphabet and got it memorized within a few days so I could at least finger-spell my thoughts to him. As I would finger-spell a word that had an official gesture, he would jump in and make the motion. I learned quite a bit from him over the next few months. We became good friends and would get together for baseball games at a pub from time to time. Unfortunately, within a year my position was eliminated, my commute stopped and we drifted apart. I still have his contact info, though. I think I'll shoot him a text and see if he wants to catch the Sox game.
Congrats on your new Factory Five!

Meganuke....,
Interesting story, so glad that you have the time to get to know deaf person, also willing to learn some sign language as manual alphabet. Not that many people do that, but you are the one of the rarest people!
So knows, some days we shall meet somewhere......

Have not work on the car lately. Still waiting for powdercoat panels come back from the shop. My rear pumpkin and spindles are back ordered. I might be well to install the brake line while waiting for the parts. I have per drilled all the panels from front and back of the car, whew thank goodness! I bought an air rivet gun, can't wait to try it out!
Gee whiz, it would be nice to have all the parts and get the ball moving!
Will post more pictures when I received the panels.

Hey Seth, sounds like you are making good progress. Welcome to the Community !
Me and my wife, Jen, purchased #2385 about 5 or 6 years ago and have been active with the FFR group here in the Atlanta area since the day we brought her home. It has been a ton of fun !!
I am HoH (grew up hearing) and Jen was born HoH and is "legally deaf". We both Sign (hers is way better than mine !!) which you'll find very useful when you have passengers in your car and can not hear anything over the pipes....instead of yelling "WHAT !!??" back and forth across the cockpit....you will be ablt to casually and comfortably hold a conversation without having to shout over the noise ! :)
These cars always are a bit of a specatacle when you are out and about in them....add in the fact that people will approach to talk and you reply "sorry, I am deaf (or HoH) can you say that again"....watch the look on their face as they try to compute the fact that you are deaf and you are driving a car like this. We've had many people look at us in disbelief when we say we are Deaf/HoH as their jaws are scraping concrete looking back and forth between us and the car... It is actually quite amusing !
You definitely will have a great time with it and I am 100% certain you will make many of your own stories to share !
Good Luck and stay in touch !
If you are ever in ATL - hit us up and maybe we can grab dinner !
Pig & Jen
It will be interesting if you end up posting a pic without you wearing ear plugs. Wonder what the safety police will have to say about that?!?
Congrats and welcome to the forum!!!
