The goal from the beginning was to build an old school car to meet current NHRA / SFI standards to comply with NHRA 8.5-Sec 179 MPH specs. This will be a tribute to the 60's and 70's era of hot rodding & grass roots drag racing. And besides, I always wanted a street legal race car.
The first attempt was a disappointment as NHRA would't certify the roll cage welded to the FFR chassis as the FFR chassis doesn't comply with minimum standards for tubing size. So I cut off the FFR chassis at the firewall and replaced everything rearward. That was rather frustrating and caused a lot of extra work and big delay in the project.
But out of this diversion came the car's name. Drag race cars of the 60's & 70's had to have a name. This one is called Divergent as the build diverged far from the typical FFR "kit car" most folks build. She's not going to resonate with everyone but some of us older types will remember the style form days gone by and may appreciate a glimpse back in time when sex was safe and racing was dangerous.
